Hi Hannah, came across your newsletter from Sophie, I've been a freelancer for nearly 9 years and now and again the freelance markets dips in and out. Jan to March is normally the worse time in the year and it picks up again when the new April kicks in due to the company's budget and tax year. Also, look into other areas such as creating content, courses etc.
thanks so much Elle, this is really helpful to know its generally a quiet time of year! And good idea to use the time to creat content or do courses. I have been doing more writing, so will keep that up! Hope freelance life is treating you well
I'm with you on this. Without having something lined up all of our mental resource goes onto finding the next opportunity - it's a fight or flight instinct when it comes to securing Income to pay the bills, which is hardly conducive for creative thinking, planning or rest!
It's helped me to think about multiple revenue streams to provide more sustainable income - it requires more upfront planning and some financial commitment but it's possible. I believe the work and demand is out there.
So true, Olivia fight or flight mode is not conducive to creativity, planning or rest! Multiple income streams is something I could definitely experiment with. I did have a period where I worked with 2-3 clients at one time but found that hard to juggle at times, especially if one of the projects was more complex and felt like 6 projects in one! But this has got me thinking of other ways I could approach it. Thanks Olivia
This kind of thing worries me about going freelance - the uncertainty. I get that this quieter period would not be conducive to rest. Typically, it’s only when you’re busy that you can look back and wonder why you didn’t rest! 🤔
It might be worth checking in with your local council. I’m in Gloucestershire and we have a Growth Hub. I’m assuming that all local councils have something similar. They do lots of free workshops to help support small businesses and startups. Topics include thinking about how to target your ideal customer, etc.
